Monthly multimedia exploration of popular literature and film with d.a.i.-teacher Scott Stelle. Oswald Spengler characterized the modern Western order as Faustian, which in profound contrast to other cultures, prioritizes limitless ambition over other values. Ours is truly an age of technology. We will explore the genre of science fiction, which was well received in America, particularly in futurist, postwar California, with its emphasis on youth, speed, technology and power.
This quarter, we'll be dealing with the paranoid fantasies of the future that were rooted in the Cold War tensions of the1950s.The subtext of these stories are invasion and mind-control, and some of the films have been characterized as “body horror” – a subgenre that showcases graphic or psychologically disturbing violations of the human body.

Fr. 5.3.: John Wyndham, The Midwich Cuckoos (1957: film: Village of the Damned, 1995)
