#Love is Love! LGBTQ Youth in California and Baden-Württemberg

Adolescence is a complicated time for all young people, but it can be especially challenging for LGBTQ youth: as they are developing into who they truly are and trying to find their place in the world, they are also facing discrimination, harassment and even violence based on their sexual orientation or gender identity. A support system, role models, and community can make all the difference during this time.

As June is LGBTQ Pride Month, we will address these issues for our EUREKA - Ländle meets California series and bring together two organizations in Baden-Württemberg and California that work with queer youth. Our guests will give us a valuable insight into their respective work, including the challenges and obstacles they face on a daily basis, and talk about best practices for empowering LGBTQ youth as well as fighting for acceptance and equality.

The event is part of an event series initiated by the State Ministry of Baden-Württemberg to enhance the relationship between the two sister states California, USA, and Baden-Württemberg, Germany. The virtual discussion will be moderated and will be followed by a Q&A with the audience.

June Wahl: June has been on the board of Lambda BW for 6 years. Lambda Baden-Württemberg (BW) is an umbrella organization that supports LGBTQ youthgroups throughout the state. Lambda aims to empower the new generation of LGBTQ to help make their voices heard and to provide them with a safe and inclusive community. The non-profit organization also hosts interactive events and networking opportunities for group leaders. In 2020 and 2021 Lambda BW launched an ongoing movie viewing project that promotes LGBTQ visibility in rural area theatres.

Justin Tindall: Justin began his professional career in 2009 as an employment specialist helping young people in Nicaragua before working as an educational specialist at the DREAM Project, a nonprofit school in the Dominican Republic. In 2012, Justin was recruited by Teach For America (TFA) and became a bilingual (English-Spanish) teacher in an elementary school in San Antonio, Texas. With the help of an It Gets Better video shared by a group at his graduate alma mater, Justin came out that same year and has since built a career around empowering LGBTQ youth. He began working for the It Gets Better Project in 2014 where he has expanded the organization’s Global Affiliate Network to 20 countries and created It Gets Better EDU, the arm of the organization that helps facilitate the introduction of LGBTQ stories into educational settings. Justin has a Master’s of Public Health (MPH) in Global Health Promotion and a Bachelor's degree in International Area Studies (Latin America) with a minor in Political Science.

Moderated by Annie Heger:

Annie Heger is one of the most famous entertainers in Northern Germany and has aways been the flamingo among the seagulls.
A real multi-talent, she is involved in a variety of artistic endeavours; as a columnist for a national radio company, as a "100% Mensch" activist, as a book author and also as a stage performer in various social-satirical comedy shows. She presents the biggest live shows in the country and is not afraid to talk about the most difficult social problems on stage. She was born in East Frisia, grew up as one of seven children in a blended family, travelled the world, once lost her heart in the USA, now lives in Berlin and is a successful singer, presenter and actress in English, Low and Standard German.

About the series:

Eureka! Ländle Meets California is a digital event series on the sister state partnership between Baden-Württemberg and California. In monthly events, we will explore what our two states have in common, what we can learn from each other and how we can work together more closely. American and German experts on both sides of the Atlantic will discuss topics such as environment, higher education, tech startups, national parks, migration, queer culture, and the film industry. We want to initiate conversations that create new ideas and networking opportunities to further strengthen the partnership between California and Baden-Württemberg going forward. The series is organized by the DAZ Stuttgart in cooperation with the German-American Institutes in Freiburg, Heidelberg, and Tübingen, and with generous support of the State Ministry of Baden-Württemberg. The sister state agreement was signed by Governor Jerry Brown and Minister President Winfried Kretschmann at a global climate summit in San Francisco in 2018.
